Guatemala, 1770-1800, usually used for a treasured item like tobacco;
inscribed
SYU RUO AL SR TTE CORL DN JUAN DE AY SSA ANO DE 1782 (I was given to Senor Lieutenant Coronal Don Juan de Ayssa, year 1782);
6"h; 6"w; along with
(2) COCONUT CHOCOLATE CUPS of the same origin, 4.5"h; and a BOOK, "The Young Nelson in the Americas", Tom Pocock
Collector's note: "Ayssa was the Spanish garrison commander of El Castillo, Rio San Juan de Nicaragua. In 1780 Ayssa lost the battle for El Castillo to Horatio Nelson as the English attempted to cut in half the Spanish hold on Central America. The English victory was short lived and, due to disease, El Castillo was abandoned. Ayssa and his top officers were released. Ayssa made it to Cuba, but returned to Nicaragua as governor in 1782 while Lord Nelson went on to fame and glory. The English lost around 3000 men in at least three failed attempts to capture El Castillo."
