attrib. JENNIE THLUNAUT, TLINGIT CHILD'S CHILKAT BLANKET
c. 1930, characteristic pentagonal form; a centered totemic face within a dotted frame; four disparate body elements surrounding the principal figure within multiple solid color borders; braided ties at the sides and lengthy fringed suspensions; 27"l; 38"w
Provenance: Bonhams and Butterfields, 12/6/2004,
Ethnographic Art, lot 1056
Previously purchased by the owner's parents in the early 1930's near Haines, Alaska.
Jennie Thlunaut (Shax'saani Keek) (1891-1986) was one of the last traditional Tlingit weavers. She moved to the Haines area in 1920 after the death of her first husband. An inventory of her blankets (as recalled by her) includes a few sold near Haines. The timing and quality of this example are in keeping with her work.
There are articles, books and films featuring Jennie, and her weavings have been represented in many museum shows and collections. She was committed to her Tlingit culture and mentored others to carry on the tradition.

Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000
Realized: $14,000 - Excluding Buyer's Premium
