NORTHWEST COAST CHILKAT BLANKET
late 19th/ early 20th c., woven in mountain goat wool and cedar bark in the "diving whale" pattern, the crested creature shown in the central design panel with large eyes and snout toward the bottom, the fin at top, all rendered in conventionalized geometric style; the mirror image side panel in an array of emblematic motifs within a solid color pentagonal frame decorated with five small whirling logs; the long, twisted fringe suspensions in yellow, aqua blue, black and white; 51"l; 69"w

Previously from the estate of Dr. Hume Wadsworth, Rochester, NY. The blanket was on loan for a decade to the Rochester Museum and Science Center's Native American Collection in the 1970"s, and subsequently hung in Dr. Wadworth's dental office until his retirement.
