SPANISH/PORTUGUESE COLONIAL SILVER INCENSE BOAT (NAVETA)
c. 1750-1825, unmarked, a Far-Eastern boat with chased decoration; the scrolled back section of the boat with hinged lid with applied masques; the prow is mounted with a winged dragon; boat is mounted on a silver pedestal with round base,7.25"h; 9.75"w; 2.75"d; 16.5 troy oz.
Ships of this sort were used to transport goods to and from the Far East. Small models like this were used to store incense. The influence of Far Eastern design on silverwork was especially popular in the Andean countries in the 16th to 18th c. Unmarked silver is typical if ordered by the church which was exempt from the usual 10% tax.
