Wilfrid came from a family of shipbuilders. He studied with Lord Kelvin in Glasgow before settling in Boston in 1902. In 1918 he established the firm of Kelvin and Wilfrid O. White Co. located on State Street in Boston. He sold sextants, compasses in large binnacles, chronometers, binoculars, taffrail logs, barometers, and charts for all oceans. For two generations the company manufactured the highest quality navigation instruments.
