Yoshitoshi is considered one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e.
As a boy, Yoshitoshi's first teacher was Utagawa Kuniyoshi. At 20, he became an independent artist, and, in the same year, was listed tenth in a published ranking of the leading ukiyo-e artists.
