(on 3) CAPTAIN'S WHALING LOG, 1857
Edwin Grinnell, Master of the ship Arab out of Fairhaven
commences Tuesday, November 8th, 1857 to May 20, 1862, leather bound,
March 1860 mentions the "Japan Islands"
May 1st, 1860, "the whale run very bad got Starboard boat got fast shot with bomb lances besides lances and spades but he never stopped running until dark and we cut from him lost 4 lances 2 spades and 6 irons..."
along with THE ARAB ACCOUNTING LOG
(unbound), and another 1867 unidentified log (unbound)
Draws a whale's tail when whale sighted. Draws a pile of rocks when land sighted.
Seems Capt. Grinnell died in 1861 in Yokahama.
First two pages torn out. The first 11 pages dated April 30 to August 8 appear to be of a different hand and style, unidentified ship.
