Private Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Siklosi. Bogota, N. J. Code No. 1897
Mr. Siklosi was in the C Co. 329 Engineer Battalion during WWII. During the Battle of the Bulge, in anticipation of a German tank attack, his detail was ordered into a land mine field to booby-trap land mines laid by Americans at a defensive position near Duren, Germany. Several teams of three, using a map, ventured into the field and connected explosives to the mines. The ground was frozen and the task difficult. Two of the team next to Mr. Siklosi were killed when a mine exploded. The medics would not come onto the mine field, so the wounded man was carried back to safety where he shortly died. The sergeant blamed himself for the deaths and attempted to kill himself with his rifle. He was restrained and evacuated. "I never saw him again...Incidentally, the anticipated German attack never materialized."
