Initially an actor, Gongaza became a pupil of the painters Visentine and Moretti at the Academia di Venizia in 1775. As a scene painter, he first worked in 1779 at the Teatro alla Scala. Upon invitation, in 1789 he became the decorator of Prince Youssupoff"s (Ambassador of the Czar in Milan) private theater. Gongaza was made a member of the Academy of St. Petersburg in 1795. He died in St. Petersburg. As a stage designer, he believed that scenery should dominate over text and music.
