18TH CEN. AMERICAN POWDER HORN: STEPHEN OLNEY Rhode ILD 1 Rgt 1774 9" long; 3.5" at bottom Captain Stephen Olney (Oct. 1755-Nov. 23, 1832) at 20 years old entered the Revolutionary War as a Lieutenant stationed at Roxbury, Mass. When British left Boston, he marched to New York. He was in the Battle of Long Island and the retreat through the Jerseys. Promoted to Captain. Became friends with Gen. Lafayette. Married Dorcas Smith in 1777 and had 8 children. Wounded in the war, he resided in his ancestral home of 500 acres in North Providence RI until his death. The etching circles the horn showing the State House, Christopher Wren church, and harbor buildings with large ship entering harbor. Band on bottom with name, etc.
