Northern Germany, overall cast decoration, one side with a rearing lion and griffin beneath a head in a cloud; the reverse, Apollo with bow and arrows and a I and a P, standing beneath a shield with guild crest or master founder's mark. flanked by his sisters Artemis and Hygieia who holds an orb; initial I and P, with a later etched date of 1730 (a later date is common when mortar was give to commemorate an event, wedding, inheritance, etc.); 21 incised in the band of the orb; double dolphin handles; 7.5"h; 7"diam. ; 20 pounds
Apollo was also the god of healing and medicine. flanked by his sister Artemis (Diana) and Hygieia (goddess of health/cleanliness)

The Master Founder's Mark: In 1621, bell and mortar founders used a geometric mark called a Hausmarke (house mark). These consisted of a shield containing crossed lines, chevrons, triangles, and compass-like points used to identify the specific foundry master
