oil/canvas; 22 by 24 in.; original frame, 27.5 by 29.5 in.; Chapman Bros., Chelsea label (Nicholson's framer); also a Bourlet & Sons, London label - stock #76466, the firm commonly employed for the packing and transport by, and to exhibitions, museums and auction houses; also, a chalk number 725-2. Another old auction partial paper label, Est. V. White...poss. from Parke-Bernet, February 1966, auc. #2581 which included the estate of Vera White.

Estate of V White refers to Vera White. Vera is listed in two of Winifred's address books as living in...Ardmore, Pennsylvania. The first book is from the 1920's...so clearly Vera White was someone that Winifred kept in touch with...it is no surprise that Winifred to have made friends with an American. I suspect that Vera White purchased the picture not long after it was painted... Both White and Nicholson exhibited at the Lefevre Gallery in London, Winifred in 1928 and White in July 1931..."
Signing twice on rolled over canvas was common for Nicholson to avoid disrupting the image on the front. Her double signature implies she signed upon completion, and a second time when a work left her studio for an exhibition or sale.
Prov. Originally Vera White collection (1888-1966), an American modernist artist and collector of European Modernist and Avant-Garde art. The bulk of the White collection, approx. 400 modern masterworks, was bequeathed to the Philadelphia Art Museum in 1967. This work comes from a private home in. New York.
The White Collection is heavily documented for its connections to European Modernist masters like Picasso, Matisse and Piet Mondrian, Mondrian's formal correspondence directly ties back to Winifred Nicholson who helped manage Mondrian's transitions and art sales in the 1930s. Winifred Nicholson was married to artist Ben Nicholson.
