Born in Copenhagen, Jacobsen came to America in 1871 and worked painting safes. An executive at the Old Dominion Steamship Company was impressed with his work, asked Jacobsen to paint pictures of the company's ships, launching a lifetime career. During the late 19th century, he was, commissioned extensively to paint vessels for posterity, often painting a ship repeatedly for its both owners and officers.
Ship history: Built in 1875 in Scotland (named Branksome). Purchased in 1881 by Compania Transatlantica Espaola, renamed Panama. Captured in 1898 during the Spanish American War and assigned as a troop transport to the US Army. Later she was fitted by the Morse Iron Works, NY as a cable-laying ship for Philippine service and renamed Hooker. In 1899, on a cable-laying mission in the Philippines, Hooker ran aground in Manila Bay and was a total loss.
