NEST OF (7) NANTUCKET HANDLED BASKETS, ARTHUR MARTIN
1980's; all sgn. on bottom in ink script: Arthur E. Martin/ARM/ the largest marked #1-90-1, 8"h, 16" by 17", not incl. handle; and the smallest #7-90-1 (smallest) measured 5"h, 6.5" by 8.5"; all with wood swing handles
Arthur R. Martin (Massachusetts, 1930-2000) served in the navy during World War II and worked as a heavy equipment engineer. Later he established a furniture refinishing business and antique shop. He was incarcerated for eight years at MCI Norfolk and Warwick, MA where he learned his skill as a basket maker.
Overall good condition. Rim damage on #7 smallest and minor break in weave near base; #6 has rim damage (chewed); minor weave damage near base; #5 two rim lashings missing; #4 two rim lashings missing, weave patch missing near base; #1 one rim lashing missing.
Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000
