celestial and a terrestrial globes, both labeled Loring's and dated 1854: brass calibrated meridian; mounted in ornate cast iron stands with acanthus leaves and scrolling feet with casters (one caster missing); chapter rings in good order: globe 12" diam.; total height 43"; stand 34.5"h

Josiah Loring first started selling globes in Boston in 1832; Joslin Gilman began working for Loring in 1837, later taking over the business.
Original surface: Celestial: spotting to surface; small surface ding in Cancer; minor surface scrapes here and there; varnish worn in Northern hemisphere;Terrestrial: circular scraping on bottom of globe from being turned on stand; three old drips of unknown origin; age spots in old varnish(can be cleaned); ; very small piece of iron arm support to chapter ring where it meets the stem is missing (see in photo).
