Desch studied under William Merritt Chase at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1906. He later studied under Charles Hawthorne at his Provincetown Cape Cod School of Art. In 1914, Desch, Hawthorn and other artists founded the Provincetown Art Association.
