Born in Marion, Massachusetts, in 1919 when 29 years old, Delano went West to Colorado to work as a ranch hand. He wrote and illustrated (106 illus.) a weekly series for Western Story Magazine, a chronological account of the development of the West starting before the white man up to modern times. In 1940 Delano decided then to end his career as an illustrator and begin his career as a painter.
