'Promessi Sposi' is an Italian historical novel published in the 1840's by Allesandro Manzoni set in Lombardy during the Spanish occupation of the late 1620's. The mosaic depicts the scene when a priest, Don Abbondio, friends to ill-fated lovers, while walking along a mountain path, encounters two bravi, or hired thugs. The bravi tell Don Abbondio that their master, Don Rodrigo, forbids the marriage between Renzo and Lucia, and they threaten Don Abbondio's life.
