domed hinge lid on round step-molded foot; handle decorated with heart shaped accent near bottom of body; monogram reads Randall Clifford from his grandfather, C.S. Randall, May 12th 1889; marked J.S at bottom of base and interior of lid; dated 1774 at base bottom; 8''h; 7''w, 4.25''d; 26.4 troy oz.
Provenance: purchased from the South Dartmouth estate of Mary Irwin Stedman, widow of William E. Stedman (d. 1993), direct descendant of Founding Father, William Ellery.
Randall Clifford was the grandson of John H. Clifford (1809-1876), American lawyer and 21st governor of Massachusetts, serving 1853-1854. John H. Clifford is well known for leading the prosecution for the Parkman-Webster murder case, the first legal instance by which forensic dentistry was used for a conviction.
Charles Sturtevant (C.S.) Randall was Randall Clifford's maternal grandfather.
