This design was originally commissioned by Jackie Onassis.
Karl Springer (1931-1991), born in Berlin, Germany, was an American furniture designer, active from the 1960's through the 1990's. He immigrated to the United States in 1957 to became the top window dresser at Lord and Taylor on 5th Ave. in NYC. On the side, he created leather accessories when placed in Bergdorf Goodman's became an immediate sensation. After opening his own small shop in NYC, it is said that the Duchess of Windsor discovered him and was his greatest patron. This paved the way for his career in furniture production in partnership with furniture designer Mark Eckman. After his death, in 1994, he was honored with a solo exhibition at the New York School of Design. Production at his New York based company ceased in 1992.
