Merkin taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence for 42 years. In 1962-63 he received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship. His work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney in NYC, as well as, among others, the Smithsonian Institute.
