WORKS OF ERNEST MORENON, NA (Marseille/Boston, 1904-2003)
We have been commissioned by the family to offer at auction the contents of the studio of the late artist Ernest Morenon. Born in Marseille, he studied at the Ecole Nationale de Beaux Arts in Paris. He is best known in France where he won a gold medal for his massive carved oak relief panels (35-40' tall) to the entrance of the 1937 Paris International Exhibition of Arts and Technology. These were destroyed in 1938. He emigrated to Boston in 1943 and taught sculpture at the Cambridge School of Design (1947-1950) and at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School (1950-1965). He was head of the sculpture department at the Boston Fine Arts Museum from 1955 to 1965. He later taught at Boston University School of Applied Arts (1966-1969). Throughout the 1950's and 70's he was one of the prominent artists commissioned for ecclesiastical works in America. His bronze and marble sculptures include 'The Pieta' in the Cathedral of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.; and several stone panels, 'Stations of the Cross', in the Cathedral of Mary our Queen, Baltimore (1958). Massachusetts commissions include works in Holyoke, five limestone plaques for the Boston Nazareth Shelter for Homeless Children (1953), and Carney Hospital (1952). Studies for these works are included in the sale.
