(on 2) CAST IRON SHIELD AND A TWO-HAND SWORD
Germany, both 19th c. copies of a mid 16th c.-style;
TEARDROP-FORM SHIELD cast by the Ilsenburg Iron Foundry in the French Mannerist-style with overall relief depicting a sky-battle scene of Zeus attacking the Titans, 28"h; 22.5"w. This shield is one of several cast iron copies that the German firm Graflich Stolberg-Wernigerodische was granted permission to make from the original in the collection of Prince Carl of Prussia (1801-1883) in the 1870's. along with
In the style of the classic two-hand (Zweihänder) swords made famous by German and Swiss mercenary troops (Landsknecht) in the sixteenth century. It has a conical pommel with engraved ornament; wooden grip wrapped in leather; large downcurved sword guards (quillons), the ends of which terminate in split scrolls; prominent side rings front and back with fleur-de-lis designs in the center; long double-edged blade with a leather covered ricasso (the unsharpened area at the top) ending in a pair of pointed flukes; the blade is stamped on both sides with an unidentified swordsmith's mark.
