This work was inspired by an English ballad from the collection of English ballads published by Francis James Child,
Childs Ballads (Boston, 1825-1896). This ballad #106 titled The Famous Flower of Serving Men is quoted on a paper label on stretcher: And meeting with a ladyes vest/Within the same myself I drest/With Silken robes, and jewels rare/I deckt me, as a ladye faire."
