Daniel Webster during a trip to Ayr, Scotland, his family birthplace, he was impressed with Ayrshire cattle. He imported a herd of the breed to his farm in Mansfield, Massachusetts which he had purchased in 1836 a few years before his trip to
Scotland. He commissioned the British trained American artist Hinckly to do this painting with the stipulation that his prize bull be the focal point. The mountains most likely are artistic license. Webster died one year after this was painted.
