Sculptor Cyrus Dallin, born in Utah, lived in Arlington, Massachusetts for over forty years. He was an Indigenous rights advocate who is well known for his sculptures honoring Indigenous peoples, Euro-American figures, and historical events and figures, incl. the Paul Revere Monument. Dallin's iconic bronze
Appeal to the Great Spirit, installed in 1912, stands outside at the Huntington St. entrance to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Two bronze outdoor works are in Arlington Center. One in the Robbins Memorial Garden between the Town Hall and the Robbins Library is a bronze of a Native American, Menotomy Hunter, installed in 1911. The base of the flagstaff at the Town Hall, commissioned by the Robbins family in 1913, consists of four sculptures: Squaw Sachem of Mistick, a prominent woman leader of a Massachusetts tribe, who deeded land in 1639 to colonists which now covers most of the Greater Boston area; a Pilgrim mother teaching her child to read; a Minuteman on guard; and a Puritan reading his bible. These works may be seen across the street from The Dallin Art Museum located on Mass. Ave in Arlington Center. It is well worth the visit.
