BOOKS: JOHN J. AUDUBON, BIRDS OF AMERICA 1856, 7 VOLS.
Birds of America, from Drawings made in the United Stated and Their Territories
New York: Published by V.G. Audubon, 1856
fully bound in embossed brown leather with gold tooling; binding 11"
Provenance: Passed down through the Schermerhorn family from the New York City estate of Alfred Schermerhorn (1819-1878). This complete set was acquired at the time of publication and has remained in the family, basically untouched, to this time.
The Schermerhorns are an important family in America. Jacob Schermerhorn and four of his brothers arrived in America from the Netherlands in the 1600s and helped to found New Amsterdam, which became New York City. Alfred Schermerhorn was the grandson of Simon Schermerhorn who, together with his brother, Peter Schermerhorn, founded the 1811 Schermerhorn Row counting houses in today's historic South Street Seaport. Simon ran the associated rope manufacturing works. The Hoyte - Schermerhorn MTA stop is named after them
Coincidentally the Schermerhorn building at 500 Broadway in Manhattan once housed the National Audubon Society, who took it over for some time as their national headquarters in 1989.
Minor rubbing to edges of leather.
Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000
