This work was written when the explorer Raleigh was imprisoned by King James I, after the death of Elizabeth I, in the Tower of London from 1603 to 1616. After his release, he conducted a final expedition to South America where he attacked a Spanish outpost. Because this violated a peace treaty, King James ordered Raleigh beheaded in 1618.
