SPANISH COLONIAL, COLOMBIA, late 16th c.
Nuesta Virgen de las Aguas
o/c (relined; the original canvas appears to be either jute or hemp); titled at bottom; 75.5 by 45 in.; frame 81.5 by 51in. (reframed in 2006)
Collector's note: Purchased in 2006 in Geneva, Switzerland. Comes with export permit from Colombian Ministry of Culture.
Collector's Note: The Virgen de las Aguas is not venerated in Spain. She is dressed in the style of the XV c., and in all aspects it is the Virgin as Queen. It is not known if it was painted in Spain and exported to Columbia. It is believed that it is a Spanish image requested especially for the Adoration for the Nuestra Senora de las Aguas Church in Bogota. This church was initiated by Juan de Cotrino in 1644 (or 1640) and blessed in 1690.
Relined in Colombia by Gutierrex-Alarcon.
Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000
