(2) ANTIQUE BEADED CORAL NECKLACES / CHACHALES
19th c., Guatemala, double strands of coral and various shaped silver beads and objects; each with a pendant of large 19th c. silver coin adorned with smaller coins, 18.5" and 23.5 length
Coral and silver were considered signs of wealth for both the Spaniards and the Maya. The Maya passed their coral from generation to generation. The West Coast of Guatemala provided a source of coral for centuries until the supply was exhausted by the Spaniards in the early 18th c. After that, imported glass was used.
Restrung on filament; coin pendant on one needs better attachment.
