SPANISH COLONIAL TABERNACLE (NICHO), ST. CHRISTOPHER
18th c., Hispano-Filipino; cylindrical-form with double doors; overall vine and floral bone inlay; silver orb and cross finial; the interior fitted with bone figure of (Saint) Christopher carrying baby Jesus on his shoulder; each door fitted with two carved bone saints; the. the interior of the hand-hewn wood case covered with fabric and repousse silver; 19"tall
Saint Christopher, believed to be 7.5 feet tall, is the patron saint of travelers. He was born in Canaan and died in present day Turkey a martyr at the hands of the Romans in 251A.D. In 2014, Pope Paul dropped him as a saint because there was not enough historical evidence that he existed, but most people ignore this.
