Collector's note: "Most likely this was ordered by a Spanish official stationed in Guatemala to be a prestigious show item, rather than to have utilitarian use. Much of Guatemalan silver design is drawn from the English or Spanish, but not in this case. The base plate resembles the larger, more ornate Augsburg (Bavaria)-style, not the English-style which stands on individual legs." During the first half of the 17th c., the city of Augsburg was pivotal in the European network of goldsmiths attracting goldsmith journeymen from all over Europe. In the 18th c. a large number of silver and goldsmiths became master craftsmen in Augsburg, a center of major wealth generated through banking and metals.
