NORTHWEST COAST KWAKIUTL FEAST BOWL FRAGMENT
red cedar, in the form of a serpent head representing the powerful Sisiutl, with a large, grimacing mouth, upward curving nose, large eyes with broad flat eyebrows; remnants of blue-green paint about the eyes, traces of black on brows and end of mouth; 25.25"; mounted on iron stand

This fragment comes from one end of a huge feast bowl that was once the property of Chief Walkus of Blunden Harbor. The bowl was photographed by Edward Curtis in 1912 (Curtis, 1915, no. 176). Two other fragments from the central portion of the bowl are in the Seattle Art Museum Hauberg Collection (Holm 1983, p. 80, no. 133) and the Thaw Collection, Fenimore House Museum, Cooperstown, NY.
