Provenance: Bonhams and Butterfields, San Francisco, Native American and Pre-Colombian Art, 6/04/2007, lot 4425. From the collection of James C. Garner and Dr. Beatrice Medicine, anthropologist, author, educator, Native American activist and member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe.
The maker, Kidd Smith, is registered as a participant in The Indian Arts Project, Rochester NY (1935-41). Museum Director, Arthur C. Parker (Seneca), used Federal funds to employ 31 men and women from the Tonawanda Reservation to create traditional tribal objects for museum collections as well as to use for educational purposes.
