Loie Fuller (b. Illinois, 1862- d. Paris, 1928) was famous in America for works such as the Serpentine Dance (1891). Feeling that she was not taken seriously by the public who thought of her primarily as an actress, and after a warm reception in Paris during a tour, Fuller remained in France where she was a regular performer at the Folies Bergère. She was admired by Toulouse-Lautrec and became the embodiment of the Art Nouveau movement. Fuller supported other pioneering performers, such as Isadora Duncan. She ignited Duncan's European career in 1902 by sponsoring concerts in Vienna and Budapest. A Renaissance woman Fuller held many patents related to stage lighting including chemical compounds for creating color gel and the use of chemical salts for luminescent lighting and garments. She was also a member of the French Astronomical Society. Fuller dance clips may be seen on uTube.
