ENGLISH CHARLES II BRASS LANTERN CLOCK
last quarter 17th c., weight driven movement; 6" brass dial inscribed John Ebsworth Bethlehem / Londoni fecit
raised chapter ring with Roman numerals and half hour markings, tulip engraving;
with pendulum;15"h; 6"w; 7"d; with modern walnut bracket
Ebsworth (d. 1699), a pre-eminent and important early clockmaker, was apprenticed to Richard Aymes in February 1657, becoming free in April1665.
He was an assistant to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1682, becoming a warden between 1694 and 1696; and finally Master in 1697.
Chain missing (now replaced with modern rope).
