As far back as the 1st cen. A.D., the fish remains a strong symbol of Christianity. In Roman times when Christianity was outlawed, the fish was the secret symbol telling Christians where it was safe to meet. In the New Testament, most of the 12 Apostles were fishermen. Later wearing a silver fish became a popular religious tradition.
