MOUNT ATHOS SILVER AND CARVED BOXWOOD CROSS
poss. Serbian, 18th c. or earlier
front and reverse each with six finely carved boxwood panels depicting Christ and various figures; the cross is framed in silver with applied silver floral and leaf adornments (traces of gilt wash);
each side inset with four red glass beads; 4" h; 3.25"w; .5"d

Mount Athos, a peninsula in Northern Greece is known for its Christian monastic traditions as far back as 800 A.D. At present it remains a monastic community of the Eastern Orthodox Church consisting of 20 monasteries housing monks from Greece, Russia, Serbia, and other neighboring countries. Women and most female animals are banned.
Hole in bottom of cross indicates it was mounted and meant to be viewed on both sides.
