From a North Shore, Massachusetts home. Born in Minsk, Russia, Paeff's family emigrated to American when she was one year old. She studied art in Boston. In 1914 she attended the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She studied sculpture with Cyrus Dallin and Bela Pratt.
