"...the number of wives permitted to accompany the regiment on active service was laid down in the regulations...these camp followeres were evidently indispensable to troops who, without them, would have had to fend for themselves...when wounded or sick...When smoke lay thick over the the battlefield, it was a fortunate company that possessed a Mother Courage who would venture out between the fighting ranks to administer a gulp of brandy as mouthwash and simulant combined.
