LARGE SPANISH COLONIAL SILVER-CLAD FIGURE, ARCHANGEL SAN MIGUEL
1770-1788, plinth marked ABILA (Pedro de Avila), the assayers zig-zag marks and eagle; the figure, clad in chased and embossed silver armor, wearing a three feathered helmet, is holding a scale and sword, and is standing on an inverted bowl-style plinth, 46"h; weight of silver unknown since arms and legs are possibly silver clad over wood.
This is the sixth installment CRN Auctions has sold from the Spanish Colonial collection of
this Connecticut gentleman.
Abila is considered to be the Mexican silversmith Pedro de Avila (1770-1788)
St. Michael, the Defender of God, usually has a shield, not a scale (justice). This arrangement means St. Michael, provider of justice in defense of God.
Some few elements, such as the cross bar of the balance and arms may be plated silver over copper.
Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000
Realized: $20,000 - Excluding Buyer's Premium
