The 1935 Metropolitan Museum of Art Exhibition of Contemporary American Industrial was a formal recognition of the field. The works of the first wave of industrial designers was exhibited including Walter von Nessen, Eliel Saarinen, Walter Teague, and William Lescaze. Von Nessen studied under Bruno Paul at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin and taught at the Charlottenburg Art School. After the war, he worked for architect Peter Behrens in Berlin and designed furniture in Stockholm from 1919 to 1923. Von Nessen immigrated to America in 1923 opening Nessen Studios, with his wife Margaretta, in NYC in 1927. He was almost exclusively devoted to the design and fabrication of architectural lighting.
