SPANISH COLONIAL-STYLE MANCERINA
19th c., glazed Spanish ceramic dish with center cup holder supporting a carved coconut shell cup from Nicaragua dated 1899, plate 7.5" diam; cup 4"h
A mancerina was named after the man who had invented it, Pedro de Toledo, 1st Marquis of Mancera, who served as Viceroy of Peru from 1639 to 1648. A mancerina was a deep, wide saucer, in the center of which was a cup holder which would keep the chocolate cup steady. Later arriving in France, they were called trembleuse.
