Coral and silver were considered signs of wealth for both the Spaniards and the Maya. The Maya passed their coral from generation to generation. The west coast of Guatemala provided a source of coral for centuries until the supply was exhausted by the Spaniards in the early 18th c. After that, imported glass was used in place of coral. Silver coins and beads, also alloy, were added and replaced often. Necklaces were continually restrung.
