(2) 17TH C. JOHN OGILBY ENGRAVINGS
John Ogilby (1600-1676), English geographer and publisher
Fluvius Grandis, Portuguese fort in the Amazon Delta, colonizers and slaves; the other,
Alagoa Ad Austrum, Portuguese fort in Brazil, colonizers and slaves
hand-colored engravings, image 11.5 by 14 in.; both matted, framed under glass, 18 by 21.5 in.
Both appeared in John Ogilby's innovative atlas "America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World" published in London in 1671. While producing his atlases in 1671, Ogilby secured the royal title of his Majesty's cosmographer.
In 1500, Brazil was claimed for Portugal on the arrival of the Portuguese fleet commanded by Pedro Álvares Cabral. In 1578, the then King of Portugal Dom Sebastião disappeared in the Alcacer-Quibir war, a conflict between Portugal and the Moors in Morocco. The king had entered the war without the support of his uncle, the King of Spain Philip II, and the necessary resources to fight properly. With his disappearance, and since he had no direct heirs, King Philip took control of the Portuguese lands, and it stayed like this until 1640, in what was called the Iberian Union. Brazil was added to the Spanish Empire but kept under Portuguese administration, until Portugal restored its independence in 1668 and the Portuguese colonial possessions were given back to the Portuguese crown.
Good color; spots of foxing and discoloration to both; both with vertical center fold.
Estimate: $700 - $900
