and a handwritten letter dated 10/8/1999 from the artist to the collector..."The illustration you own was painted by me in 1960. I did a whole series of Esso map overs during that year. If my memory serves me correctly, my daughter and I posed for the painting. I'm glad that you enjoy it. It's interesting how pictures turn up in such odd places over the years. Terpning is best known for his works depicting cowboys and Native Americans. By 1962 as a freelance artist Terpning, using an agent, did commercial art including movie posters, magazine covers, story illustrations, etc. Around 1974 he devoted himself to his true calling, the American West.
