NEW YORK CLASSICAL 3-PIECE COIN SILVER TEA SET
c. 1835, stamped WATERMAN & VAN NESS /N YORK
consisting of a footed teapot, creamer and open sugar, 83 troy oz.
Descended through the family to the present, on the paternal side, of Dr. John Shelby (1786-1859), a prominent physician in East Nashville, Tenn. where he built a mansion for each of his two daughters. This lot from 'Fatherland' (the other mansion 'Boscobel'). Not only did the family lose its wealth after the Civil War, but both mansions burned with a large part of Nashville in 1916 in the "Fire of the Century". Additional provenance available on lot 248.
Sugar has slight lean where stem meets base; small ding in body.
