Descended through the family to the present, on the paternal side, of Dr. John Shelby (1786-1859), a prominent physician in East Nashville, Tenn. where he built a mansion for each of his two daughters. This lot from 'Fatherland' (the other mansion 'Boscobel'). Not only did the family lose its wealth after the Civil War, but both mansions burned in 1916 in the "Fire of the Century". Shelby Park in Nashville is named after John Shelby. Family also connected to Isaac Shelby (1750-1826), the first and fifth governor of Kentucky. On the maternal side, the consignor is descended from the the Cox family, descendants of Robert E. Lee.
