19TH C. GRAND TOUR PLASTER INTAGLIO COLLECTION
19th c., consisting of 140 oval intaglio, each framed in yellow gilt paper, numbered and sgn. John Tyrrell, depicting various classical and historical subjects; housed in their original pine box fitted with four sliding trays; lid bears inscription; H.G. No.5, 3.5"h; 17"w; 12"d
Prince Stanislas Poniatowski (1754-1833), the nephew of the last King of Poland, commissioned approximately 2500 gems in the neo-classical style by a group of gem-engravers in Rome. After his death, Poniatowski's collection was offered for sale as ancient gems by Christie's in London in 1839. Once discovered that the gems were not ancient, the sale was unsuccessful, however, John Tyrrell acquired over 1000 and had numerous plaster casts made. Tyrrell published his collection in 1841 in a catalogue written by James Prendeville.
