mid 19th c., Southern India, central design of depicting a Mughal representation of the Christian nativity including Mary, the Christ Child, Joseph, the three wise men, etc., all in Mughal dress; alloy of zinc and copper, with custom display stand, 30.5"
Christianity was received and adopted in several other countries before it came to India. The reception of Christianity was unique in that it was accommodated in a manner serving the interests of the Mughal rulers. In that way Christian values and traditions were assimilated in the culture.
